Mighty Cordial of You
- In the olden days, when people were sick, they ate and drank the strangest concoctions in the hopes that these quirky pastes and potions would make them feel better. Certain brews called "cordials" were supposed to help soothe the heart.
Unfortunately, many cordials seem like they would be more effective at stopping the heart! For instance, a cordial called "Snail Water" appeared in a recipe book in 1756.
The recipe called for combining four gallons of French brandy, a variety of herbs and spices, nine quarts of snails and a quart of worms. The snails and worms were to be strained out of the liquid before serving--little good that will do!
A drink like this brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, "Look out stomach, here it comes!"
