Crossed Lines For about three months earlier this year, residents of Pineville, Louisiana, were becoming concerned about white thread-like strands and dark specks that they were finding in the water filters in their washing machines, dish washers, and ice makers. They finally learned the nauseating truth in May, when city officials revealed that the homes were accidentally receiving a mixture of drinking-water and sewer-water. The white strands were toilet paper, and the dark material was poop. Not to worry, said city officials.
